ADHD and Sensory Clothing for Children

Not every child with ADHD has sensory difficulties — but many do. Research suggests that up to 50% of children with ADHD experience significant sensory processing differences. For these children, what they wear matters enormously.

ADHD and Sensory Sensitivity

ADHD affects how the brain regulates attention, impulse control and activity levels. For many children, this also means their nervous system is less efficient at filtering sensory input. A tag, a seam, or a fabric that feels "wrong" does not just register as mild irritation — it becomes a persistent distraction that competes with everything else the child is trying to focus on.

Some children with ADHD are sensory-avoidant — overwhelmed by textures, sounds and sensations. Others are sensory-seeking — craving pressure, movement and input. Both can find standard clothing genuinely challenging, and both deserve clothing that does not add to the load.

Dressing and ADHD

Getting dressed is also a sequencing task. It requires planning, working memory and fine motor control — areas that are often harder for children with ADHD. Clothing with buttons, laces or fiddly fastenings adds an extra layer of difficulty that can turn a morning routine into a significant source of frustration, for children and parents alike.

Simple, easy-on clothing is not just about sensory comfort. It supports independence, reduces points of friction in the morning, and helps children start their day feeling capable rather than already defeated.

What We Built

Morning Marvels was founded by Anaïs, a parent of two neurodivergent children — and someone with ADHD herself. The clothing is designed from lived experience. Every detail, from the TENCEL™ Modal fabric to the outward-facing seams and pull-on designs, is there for a reason.

No buttons. No zips. No labels. Just soft, stretchy clothing that children can put on themselves, that feels the same way every time they wear it, and that does not add to the sensory load of an already busy brain.

Getting Support

If your child has an ADHD diagnosis and you are noticing sensory difficulties, an occupational therapist can assess their specific sensory profile and suggest strategies alongside clothing changes. Your child's school SENCO is also a useful starting point.

For more information, ADHD UK and YoungMinds both offer helpful resources for families navigating ADHD in children.

We use "children with ADHD" and "ADHDers" interchangeably — use whichever language feels right for your family. Identity-first language ("ADHDer") is increasingly preferred within the ADHD community.
