Dyspraxia & Sensory-Friendly Clothing for Children

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and Clothing

For children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) — also known as dyspraxia — getting dressed can be one of the most frustrating parts of the day. Not because they are not trying, but because the physical and sensory demands of clothing work against them at every step.

What Is DCD / Dyspraxia?

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), also known as dyspraxia in the UK, is a common condition affecting fine and gross motor coordination in children and adults. It makes physical tasks that most people do automatically feel effortful and unpredictable. DCD affects around 5–6% of children and is more commonly identified in boys, though girls are frequently underdiagnosed.

Children with DCD often also experience sensory processing differences, which means clothing can be challenging on two levels: the physical mechanics of dressing, and the sensory experience of what they are wearing.

Why Clothing Is Hard with DCD

Buttons, zips, laces and poppers all require fine motor control and motor planning — the ability to sequence the steps of a task and execute them smoothly. For a child with DCD, each fastening is a genuine cognitive and physical challenge, not just an inconvenience.

On top of this, many children with DCD have heightened tactile sensitivity. Labels, seams and scratchy fabrics can feel intolerable, and clothing that twists or shifts unpredictably during the day is a constant source of distraction.

Common clothing challenges include:

  • Buttons, zips, laces and popper fastenings
  • Clothes that must go on in a specific sequence (which way round, which end first)
  • Tags and labels that irritate throughout the day
  • Internal seams, particularly at the toe and neck
  • Garments that twist or bunch when moving
  • Getting clothes the right way round consistently

What Helps

The single most effective change is removing fastenings entirely. Pull-on clothing with no buttons, zips or laces reduces the motor planning demand and lets children dress independently — which matters enormously for confidence.

At Morning Marvels, everything pulls on. There are no fastenings anywhere on our pyjamas or vests. Our TENCEL™ Modal fabric is smooth and consistent — it does not twist, bunch or feel different from one wear to the next — which reduces the sensory unpredictability that can make clothing so hard to tolerate.

Other things that help:

  • Tag-free clothing — one less thing to manage and one less irritant to tolerate all day
  • Seams on the outside — so nothing presses against the skin when moving
  • Consistent fit — stretchy, forgiving fabric that feels the same whether sitting, running or lying down
  • Minimal decision-making — a small, predictable wardrobe reduces the cognitive load of getting dressed

Support and Next Steps

If you think your child may have DCD, ask your GP for a referral for an assessment. Occupational therapy is one of the most effective supports — an OT can assess your child’s specific motor and sensory profile and suggest practical strategies for daily life, including dressing.

For more information, the Dyspraxia Foundation’s Children & Families section has practical resources and support — the charity has closed but the website is maintained as a resource. Movement Matters UK also provides detailed information on DCD for parents and professionals.

We use “dyspraxia” because it is the term most commonly searched by parents and used in everyday conversation. The clinical term is Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Both refer to the same condition — use whichever your family and your child’s school or clinicians use.

Morning Marvels is not a clinical or diagnostic service. For detailed guidance, visit:
